This concept was originally developed by Vinyas, Centre for Architectural Research & Design with support from UNICEF. Several teachers and Head Masters of schools have been trained to plan, implement and effectively use the BaLA concept in Model schools. While government may have limited resources, the demand for making or converting schools to Model schools with BaLA is growing by day.

What is BaLA ?

bala-concept

BaLA is a way to holistically plan and use the school infrastructure. It incorporates the ideas of activity based learning, child friendliness and inclusive education for children with special needs (CWSN). At the core, it assumes that the architecture of school can be a resource for the teaching-learning processes.
There are two levels of this intervention:

Develop the SPACES to create varied teaching-learning situations

Develop the BUILT ELEMENTS in these spaces as teaching-learning aids
The Spaces can be

Classroom

Corridor

Steps and staircase

Outdoor space
The Built Elements can be

Floor

Wall

Window

Door

Ceiling

Platform

Furniture

BaLA is about innovatively treating the space and the built elements to make the existing school architecture more resourceful with higher educational value in a child friendly manner.
But, why BaLA?

It Lets school be conceived in a holistic way

Makes the school a child friendly place

Can be introduced in existing and new school

Makes school an exciting place, allowing learning with fun

Creates conducive self-learning situations for children Can help creating inclusive learning spaces and provisions spaces for Children With Special Needs (CWSN) – i-BaLA is being developed for this purpose.

Allows learning materials accessible to children, at all times

Does not allow the TLM to be stolen or misplaced and hence it can can remain orderly

Allows Teachers to adapt them to suit their specific needs

Is more lasting and durable

Can be combined with building repairs and up-gradation

Intervention of BaLA could be achieved through a large inventory of ‘design ideas’ developed by Vinyas through an intense interdisciplinary approach.

This school is a rural area situated school. It has a lavish building and great environmental beauty in and around. It caters to the needs of villages Sarangpur (Chandigarh), Mullanpur (PB), Khuda Lahora (CHD), Mastgarh, Jayanti Devi, Shingari Wala, etc in and around Chandigarh. It has nearly 1500 students and 35 teachers. The performance of school academic and non- academic is excellent. In coming years this school is bound to rise into one of the best Govt. Institution in Chandigarh.

Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sarangpur, Chandigarh, affiliated with CBSE, New Delhi was established in the year 1992 and working under the Department of Education Chandigarh has come to occupy a place of prestige among the Model schools of the city.

The school helps in providing a favorable environment for socialization of the child, development of the spirit of independence and creating an identity of the child. The school is a child’s window to the world. The meaning of ‘being good’ is to develop ethical values in every sphere of action. Our morality should not be restricted to whether we are being watched or not. For example, to attempt an examination fairly on one’s own strength shows the integrity of the child, while maintaining silence only under the watchful gaze of teacher is being insincere and opportunistic. What is important is that one derives satisfaction for having performed ones duty. Not for any reward but for the satisfaction of being totally committed.

The whole school is divided into four houses namely ROSE,LILLY,LOTUS,. Healthy competitions in academics, sports, social and other fields are held on house basis. Each house elects councilor to the school. The duties of conducting morning assembly, school functions, are religiously discharged by the students through their house Captains and other executives. Every week one house is on duty and through its different squads and is responsible for the efficient conduct on morning assembly with its own prayer song, school cleanliness, Children Park, play-fields etc.
